Digital Microscopy Laboratory

The Geosciences Department houses a number of optical microscopes configured with digital cameras and Mac (OS 10.3) and PC computers (Windows) with various image analysis software packages (e.g., Photoshop, NIH Image, StripStar, etc.). These scopes and cameras are regularly utilzied for research and teaching by students and faculty in structural geology, igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary petrology, paleo, as well as civil and petroleum engineering. This lab and equipment is in addition to our teaching laboratory which contains a full suite of Nikon optical microscopes (test).

Nikon SMZ 800Instruments

2 SMZ800 Nikon Macrosopes (to image full regular and large (2x3') thin sections)

1 EPOL 600 Nikon Microscope (1.5x to 100 x objectives)

1 Digital Sight DS-5ML1 Nikon camera attached to macroscope/microscope

1 CoolSnap camera (~4 megapixel)
