Funding for Graduate Students in Geology and Geophysics
Department Assistantships and Fellowships
Almost all of our students in the Department recieve some financial assistantship, and a significant majority (>90%) receive a part-time teaching or research assistantship.
Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis, and Research Fellowships may be awarded by individual faculty depending on the availability of externally funding. Assistantship stipends vary between ~$15,000 and $22,000 depending on whether you are employed on a 9-month or 12-month basis, and whether you are a MS or PhD student. All Assistantships earn a waiver from many University levied fees, as well as out-of-state and some in-state tuition costs. State of Texas legislation prohibts the Univeristy from waiving all in-state tuition costs, but the Department works hard to provide Fellowships to off-set as much of the remaining tuition costs as possible. For more information on the approximate cost of graduate education at Texas Tech, Student Business Services have a Tuition Estimator tool.
External Fellowship and Scholarship Opportunities
Graduate students are encouraged to apply for all appropriate external funding opportunities, including research grants, grants-in-aid, and scholarship. Popular opportunities for many of our students include:

Appropriately qualified students are also strongly encouraged to consider submitting applications to various external Federal funding opportunities, including:
